The Philosophy of Information as a New Field of Research

Abstract: The lecture will provide an introduction to the philosophy of information (PI). PI is a new area of philosophical research with its own field of investigation and methodology. The lecture will open with a brief discussion of the possible definitions of PI. The main part will then be taken by the analysis of some of the principal open problems in PI. These will be organised into five areas: problems in the analysis of the concept of information, in semantics, in the study of intelligence, in the relation between information and nature and in the investigation of values. Each area is discussed in a specific section. In the conclusion, some of the consequences of PI will be discussed.
